CREAMARE: The Game endorsed as an official UNESCO Ocean Decade activity!

This recognition, entitled “Serious Game Promoting Maritime Heritage Awareness” places the project among the international initiatives that actively contribute to the Decade’s objectives, aiming to promote a more conscious and sustainable use of the oceans through science, communication and public participation. 

We are proud to share that CREAMARE: The Game has been endorsed as a Decade Activity by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science and Sustainable Development 2021-2030.

The Decade’s challenges aim to gather partners in a collective action on a global, national, regional, and local scale. Its program therefore seeks to support and implement urgent actions to protect the oceans, through a multidisciplinary approach that spans all sectors within the field of ocean science. 

Global warming, pollution and the ocean’s acidification lead to a loss in biodiversity and degradation of marine habitats. The progressive impoverishment of the oceans is endangering both the Earth’s natural balances and the global economy.

Ocean Decade aspires to engage the scientific community, the creative industry, and civil society in identifying effective and urgent responses that lead to real change.

With its captivating narrative structure, CREAMARE: The Game raises awareness of key issues related to marine environmental protection, safeguarding Underwater Cultural Heritage, and fighting ocean pollution. By combining interactive storytelling, underwater exploration and scientific outreach, the videogame is fully aligned with the goals of Ocean Decade,  which strives to deepen our understanding of ocean biology and functioning, generating new scientific knowledge, data, and information.  

By exploring nine submerged archaeological sites in the Mediterranean Sea, the game encourages consideration on the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems and the need for collective actions to protect them, together with the enhancement of the cultural treasure we are  entrusted to protect. 

The UNESCO Endorsement represents a significant milestone for the CREAMARE project, confirming the educational, cultural, and environmental value of the video game, as well as its alignment with the vision of a healthier, more productive, and resilient ocean by 2030.
