The SMILE Project – Smart Methods and Instruments for the DigitaL Enterprise – aims to study and engineer an innovative system for the acquisition and management of data coming from the production system, with the support of modeling, simulation, and ICT tools to enhance human–system interaction. Therefore, the project pursues the following objectives: Propose a vision of a flexible factory, robust and efficient thanks to the extensive use of digital solutions and the definition of tools for generating new knowledge. Acquire new solutions, approaches, and skills that enable the design and development of a Digital Enterprise, conceived as a sustainable and interconnected production center, capable of effectively addressing all the challenges and rapid changes of the market. Define and implement specific technologically innovative solutions in order to optimize factory resources and processes, making the whole system autonomous, intelligent, dynamic, cost-effective, and able to ensure products with higher performance and quality. The Project focuses on Planning & Smart Operator, Smart Manufacturing & Maintenance, Smart Assembly, and Smart Utility.
