REEVALUATE: our part in the digital transformation of CH

REEVALUATE is a Horizon Europe project focused on creating an inclusive and secure framework for the sustainable digitisation and management of Cultural Heritage (CH). The project promotes open collaboration between institutions, communities, and creative industries with the aim of developing and implementing AI-powered and co-creative tools to support every stage of a cultural asset’s digital lifecycle: from prioritisation and contextualisation to storage, collaboration, and reuse.

It is fully aligned with 3D Research’s mission to make Cultural Heritage accessible to a wide audience through innovative and engaging experiences, and to enhance inclusivity with immersive technologies and digital storytelling.

As a company specialised in 3D digitisation, XR experiences, and virtual tourism, the REEVALUATE project offers a perfect match with our strategic vision, fostering cooperation between expertise across different fields, from artificial intelligence and video production, to the cultural sectors, with experts in advertising, research and IT.

As a key partner in the REEVALUATE project, 3D Research actively contributes to the development and validation of the project’s framework, bringing its technical expertise to one of the project’s key pilot cases: From Public Sensing to Virtual Tours: The Case of Aquileia.

Specifically, in this pilot 3D Research is responsible for designing and implementing an immersive digital experience that demonstrates how digitised cultural assets can be effectively reused in the tourism sector. The core of this activity is the development of a virtual tour in which selected artefacts — prioritised using public sensing tools and enriched through input from local communities — are deeply integrated into interactive storytelling environments. This approach not only enhances the accessibility and appeal of cultural content but also promotes a more participatory and inclusive model of heritage interpretation.

In addition, 3D Research brings in-depth know-how in photogrammetry and structured light scanning, applying these high-precision techniques to ensure the accurate and high-quality digitisation of selected artefacts. These methods are employed both within this pilot and to provide technical support to other case studies within the REEVALUATE project. By applying these methods, the team helps preserve the material characteristics of the artefacts while ensuring their usability within various digital applications.

One of the key challenges addressed during this work has been balancing visual realism and data optimization, especially when preparing assets for real-time interaction in web-based environments. Another lesson learned is the importance of adapting storytelling formats to different audience expectations, which vary depending on cultural background and digital familiarity.

Through these integrated activities, 3D Research contributes to the validation of the REEVALUATE pipeline — from public participation and engagement to creative reuse in digital tourism experiences. All of this is done with careful attention to cultural sensitivity and respect for intellectual property rights, reinforcing the project’s commitment to responsible and sustainable heritage digitisation.

Thanks to its involvement in the REEVALUATE project, 3D Research has achieved key milestones in the early stages of its development. So far, the team has successfully contributed to identifying some of the artefacts that will be featured during pilot development.

Currently, 3D Research is initiating the process of digitisation of these artefacts, using photogrammetry and high-resolution 3D scanning techniques, which guarantee the creation of highly accurate digital models and ensure seamless interaction with other components of the REEVALUATE framework.

Among the main topics highlighted during the process, the protection of cultural assets emerged as a key issue. These assets are particularly vulnerable to damage caused by handling, exposure to light, and pollution.

Therefore, this experience required tailored acquisition strategies and constant calibration of equipment, highlighting the importance of flexibility and interdisciplinary collaboration in Cultural Heritage digitisation. It has been an opportunity for the team to refine best practices for future stages of the project.

In the upcoming months, 3D Research will complete the interactive narrative of Aquileia. This digital product will integrate digitised artefacts with historically validated contextual information, all within an immersive virtual environment. The goal is to create a meaningful tool for supporting both Cultural Heritage professionals, such as curators, educators and researchers, and local communities. Moreover, feedback will be collected from users to evaluate the usability of the experience. This will help ensure that the digital product is accessible, informative, and adaptable for different audiences and future use cases.
